The wind has shifted. How do I change the course?

What you can change before the gun, why nothing changes after it, and what to do on the water when the wind forces a course change mid-race.

Updated 2026-09-22

This splits hard on whether you have pressed Start race.

Before the gun (race is Scheduled) - fully supported

You have two options.

Option A: move the marks on the course you are already using

Best when the shape is right and the angle is wrong.

  1. My clubs → your club → Racing tab → Courses.
  2. Click the pencil (Edit course) on the course the race is using. (The race page shows which one, under the race name: "Course: ...".)
  3. Drag any pin on the map to move it, or open the Marks tab and type exact coordinates. Selecting a mark on the Marks tab brings it into view on the map.
  4. Save.

Every race still scheduled on that course now sails the new one. You do not need to touch the race itself. Races that have already started are untouched.

Option B: put the race on a different course

Best when you want a different shape entirely, for example swapping a windward-leeward for a triangle.

  1. Open the race: My clubs → your club → Racing tab → Manage on the race's card.
  2. Edit.
  3. Change the Course dropdown. If the course you want does not exist yet, pick Create a course in the dropdown - it takes you to the course editor and brings you back to the part-filled race form afterwards, with the new course already selected.
  4. Save.

Check your work

Either way: race page → View course. That map is the only place the marks are drawn, so it is how you confirm you changed the right thing.

After the gun (race is Live) - not supported in the app

There is no in-app shorten course and no change of course once a race is live. Edit is gone, and the app will refuse a course change with "Only scheduled races can be edited".

What to do instead:

  1. Signal on the water as you normally would. Your sailing instructions and the flags govern the race. The app is a tracker, not the race committee.
  2. Expect the tracker to keep drawing the original course. Spectators following the public link will see the marks you started on. If you have a commentator or a club Facebook post, say so there.
  3. Enter the finishes by hand. Automatic finish detection watches the original finish line, so on a shortened course it will not fire. Use Set finish on each entry to record finish times and positions yourself.

If a course change happens so early that nobody has really started, the clean option is to Cancel the race and create a fresh one on the right course. Be aware this is not free: a cancelled race is cancelled forever, and the new race gets a new public link, so anything you have already shared stops being the right link.
